How WooCommerce Handles Sitemaps
WooCommerce runs on top of WordPress. By itself, WooCommerce does not generate sitemaps; it relies entirely on the WordPress Core sitemap or third-party plugins like Yoast or RankMath.
When configured, these plugins simply treat WooCommerce products as a custom post type (product) and categories as custom taxonomies (product_cat). They output these to standard XML files like product-sitemap.xml.
What BuildSitemap Checks
BuildSitemap acts as a neutral third-party crawler. We navigate your store exactly how Googlebot does—by clicking links.
We specifically look for your /product/ and /product-category/ paths. Crucially, we ignore the parameterized URLs generated by WooCommerce's filtering widgets (like price sliders and attribute dropdowns) to ensure only canonical URLs are recorded.
URLs We Discover
- Canonical Product pages (/product/item-slug)
- Product Categories (/product-category/category-slug)
- Product Tags (/product-tag/tag-slug) - though often excluded for SEO
- Shop Base Page (/shop/)
URLs to Exclude
- Cart, Checkout, and My Account pages
- Add-to-cart URLs (?add-to-cart=123)
- Layered navigation and filters (?min_price=10&max_price=50)
- Attribute variations (?attribute_pa_color=red)
- Order tracking pages (/order-tracking/)
WooCommerce Sitemap Structure
A highly optimized WooCommerce store separates its e-commerce elements from its blog elements.
You should generate a Structured Sitemap that explicitly buckets URLs containing `/product/` and `/product-category/`. This allows you to submit your store inventory independently from your WordPress blog posts to Google Search Console.
Common WooCommerce Problems
WooCommerce's default layered navigation (filtering by size/color) creates thousands of parameterized URLs that accidentally end up indexed if not canonicalized properly.
Store owners often forget to 'noindex' the Cart, Checkout, and My Account pages, leading to crawl budget waste.
Product tags (`/product-tag/`) often create massive amounts of duplicate content matching category pages.
How to Use Your Generated Sitemap
If you are frustrated with your current WordPress SEO plugin breaking your sitemaps, you can use our generated XML file as a static replacement.
Download the generated sitemap.xml, upload it to the root of your `public_html` directory via FTP or your hosting control panel, and submit that static file to Google Search Console. Just remember to re-generate it when you add new products.
