Technical Explanation

An XML sitemap is fundamentally a list of URLs structured in a machine-readable format. Search engines like Google use this file to intelligently crawl your site.

Our generator works by initiating a BFS (Breadth-First Search) crawl starting from your root URL. It extracts all <a href="..."> tags, resolves relative paths, and normalizes them.

Crucially, it handles indexability by ignoring common tracking parameters and validating the HTTP status codes. The resulting XML file includes standard tags such as <loc>, <lastmod>, and <priority>.

Example Output

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">
  <url>
    <loc>https://example.com/</loc>
    <lastmod>2026-09-21</lastmod>
    <changefreq>weekly</changefreq>
    <priority>0.8</priority>
  </url>
  <url>
    <loc>https://example.com/about</loc>
    <lastmod>2026-09-20</lastmod>
    <changefreq>weekly</changefreq>
    <priority>0.6</priority>
  </url>
</urlset>

Common Mistakes

  • Including URLs blocked by robots.txt.
  • Including non-canonical versions of pages (like URLs with UTM parameters).
  • Including URLs that return a 404 Not Found or 500 Server Error.
  • Forgetting to declare the correct XML namespace.
  • Exceeding the 50,000 URL limit in a single sitemap file.

BuildSitemap Behavior

BuildSitemap automatically ignores URLs with invalid protocols and prevents crawling into infinite redirect loops. We currently limit our quick web crawler to a maximum duration and page depth to ensure instant results. We output standard `xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9"` compliant XML.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an XML sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file containing a list of all important pages on your website. It acts as a directory to help search engines find, crawl, and index your content efficiently.

How do I create an XML sitemap?

You can create one automatically using our generator. Just enter your URL above, wait for the crawl to finish, and download the resulting .xml file.

What URLs should be in a sitemap?

Only include URLs that you want search engines to index and rank. These should be high-quality, canonical pages that return a 200 HTTP status code.

Should noindex pages be included?

No. If a page has a 'noindex' meta tag, you are explicitly telling search engines not to index it. Including it in a sitemap sends a conflicting signal to Google.

Should redirected URLs be included?

No. You should only include the final destination URL (the one returning a 200 status code), not the URL that triggers the 301 or 302 redirect.

Can I create a sitemap without a CMS?

Yes. Our crawler navigates your site purely via HTTP requests and HTML parsing, meaning it works perfectly for custom-coded websites built with React, Next.js, HTML/CSS, etc.

What format does the generated sitemap use?

We use the standard Sitemap Protocol 0.9, which is the universally accepted format by all major search engines including Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

Where should I submit my XML sitemap?

You should submit your XML sitemap URL directly in the Google Search Console dashboard under the 'Sitemaps' tab, and similarly in Bing Webmaster Tools.
