How Magento Handles Sitemaps

Magento (Adobe Commerce) has built-in sitemap generation found in the Admin panel under Stores > Settings > Configuration > Catalog > XML Sitemap. You can configure it to auto-generate daily and include Products, Categories, and CMS Pages.

However, Magento's URL rewrite system is notoriously complex. If not configured perfectly, the native sitemap often includes multiple URLs pointing to the same product (e.g., generating URLs with the category path vs without the category path), causing massive canonicalization errors in Google Search Console.

What BuildSitemap Checks

BuildSitemap crawls your frontend via HTTP, ignoring Magento's backend database. This means we only capture the actual links your Magento theme is outputting to users.

We strictly filter out parameterized URLs. This is crucial for Magento, where layered navigation (filters) can create millions of combinations. We ensure only the clean, canonical paths are captured.

URLs We Discover

  • Clean Product URLs (/product-name.html)
  • Root Category URLs (/category.html)
  • CMS Pages (/about-us)

URLs to Exclude

  • Category-path product URLs (/category/product-name.html)
  • Layered Navigation filters (?color=12&price=-100)
  • Sorting parameters (?dir=asc&order=price)
  • Session IDs (SID=)
  • Customer account and checkout paths

Magento Sitemap Structure

Because Magento powers large catalogs, a Sitemap Index is almost always required. You should generate separate XML files for Categories and Products.

More importantly, you must ensure that your Magento configuration is set to "Use Categories Path for Product URLs: No". This ensures your products live at the root (e.g., /product.html) preventing duplicate URLs in the sitemap.

Common Magento Problems

Including both `/category-a/product-x.html` and `/category-b/product-x.html` in the sitemap instead of the canonical `/product-x.html`.

Generating sitemaps that exceed the 50,000 URL limit without properly configuring the index splitting in the Magento admin.

Including layered navigation URLs that have not been blocked by robots.txt.

How to Use Your Generated Sitemap

If you are experiencing indexation issues, use our generator to create a pristine, canonical map of your frontend. Download the resulting XML file.

You can upload this file via FTP to your Magento root directory (e.g., as sitemap-clean.xml) and submit it to Google Search Console to override or supplement the faulty native sitemap until your development team can fix the Magento URL rewrite rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Magento handle sitemaps?

Magento natively generates sitemaps via a cron job configured in the admin panel. It can split large sitemaps and output a sitemap index automatically.

Why use BuildSitemap instead of Magento's native tool?

Magento's native tool relies on database URL rewrites, which are often broken by custom themes or extensions, leading to duplicate URLs in the sitemap. BuildSitemap crawls the frontend, seeing only what a user (and Google) sees.

What about layered navigation URLs?

Layered navigation (filtering) creates a 'spider trap' of infinite URLs. BuildSitemap ignores these parameterized URLs automatically, ensuring your sitemap remains clean.

Should Magento product URLs include the category path?

No. For SEO, it is highly recommended to keep product URLs at the root level (e.g., domain.com/product-name.html). This prevents duplicate content issues when a product exists in multiple categories.

How often should a Magento sitemap be updated?

If you have a high-turnover inventory, your sitemap should be updated daily. Magento's built-in cron jobs usually handle this, but major catalog imports may require manual regeneration.

Why does my Magento sitemap have duplicate URLs?

This happens when URL rewrites fail to canonicalize, or when store views (multi-language sites) aren't configured with proper hreflang tags, causing variations to bleed into a single sitemap.
