How Wix Handles Sitemaps
Wix automatically creates and maintains a sitemap for every website hosted on its platform. This sitemap is located at /sitemap.xml and is actually a Sitemap Index that links to various sub-sitemaps (like pages-sitemap.xml, blog-sitemap.xml, and store-products-sitemap.xml).
This native file dynamically updates as you add or remove pages in the Wix Editor. However, you cannot directly edit the sitemap.xml file on Wix.
What BuildSitemap Checks
Because you cannot edit Wix's native sitemap, BuildSitemap is primarily used as an independent crawler to verify your site's structure.
We crawl the live frontend of your Wix site, navigating through JavaScript links to extract the final rendered URLs. We verify that these pages return a 200 OK status code, ensuring that the URLs you think are live are actually accessible to Googlebot.
URLs We Discover
- Standard static pages (/about, /contact)
- Wix Blog posts (/post/post-slug)
- Wix Stores products (/product-page/product-name)
- Dynamic pages linked from menus or content
URLs to Exclude
- Pages explicitly marked 'Hide this page from search results' in Wix Editor
- Wix member login and account pages
- Internal API or backend routing URLs occasionally exposed in source code
Wix Sitemap Structure
Wix relies heavily on dynamic rendering. It's crucial that the URLs you submit in a sitemap match the final, rendered canonical URL.
If you have a Wix Stores or Wix Blog setup, generating a Structured Sitemap with our tool allows you to isolate your e-commerce products from your editorial content, making it easier to diagnose indexation drops in Google Search Console.
Common Wix Problems
Hiding a page from menus in Wix does NOT hide it from search engines. If it is linked somewhere else, it will end up in the sitemap.
Old Wix sites sometimes used a hashbang (#!/) structure. Modern Wix sites use clean URLs. Ensure no old hashbang URLs are being submitted.
Accidentally toggling 'Let search engines index your site' to OFF in Wix settings blocks everything.
How to Use Your Generated Sitemap
Because Wix does not allow you to upload a custom sitemap.xml file to the root of your domain, you cannot permanently replace the native one.
However, you can still submit the custom XML file generated by BuildSitemap to Google Search Console by hosting it externally, or use the generated list to manually audit and fix the page SEO settings inside your Wix Editor so the native sitemap updates correctly.
