How Webflow Handles Sitemaps
Webflow has a native feature to auto-generate a sitemap. You can enable this in your Project Settings under the SEO tab by toggling "Auto-generate sitemap" to YES. This creates a standard `sitemap.xml` file at your root domain.
Alternatively, Webflow allows you to write a custom sitemap in that exact same settings pane. You can paste raw XML code into the "Custom sitemap" text box if you want complete control over what gets submitted to Google.
What BuildSitemap Checks
BuildSitemap acts as a secondary validation layer. We crawl the actual published HTML of your Webflow project.
We discover your static pages (like the Homepage or About page) and heavily test your CMS Collection templates (e.g., Blog Posts or Case Studies) to ensure the slugs are rendering correctly and returning 200 OK status codes.
URLs We Discover
- Static Pages (/about, /contact, /pricing)
- CMS Collection items (/blog/post-slug, /team/member-name)
- Webflow Ecommerce Products (/product/item-slug)
- Webflow Ecommerce Categories (/category/category-slug)
URLs to Exclude
- Pages explicitly set to draft or password-protected
- Utility pages like 404.html or 401.html
- CMS Collection template pages that do not have active items bound to them
- The webflow.io staging domain (ensure you only sitemap your custom domain)
Webflow Sitemap Structure
Webflow's auto-generator creates a simple, flat XML sitemap. If you run a large CMS-heavy site (e.g., a massive editorial publication built on Webflow), this flat structure makes it difficult to track indexation.
By using our Structured Sitemap option, you can isolate your CMS Collections (like `/blog/` or `/resources/`) into distinct blocks, making your XML file much easier to manage.
Common Webflow Problems
Publishing the sitemap on the `.webflow.io` staging domain instead of the custom canonical domain, causing duplicate content issues.
Forgetting to toggle off 'Auto-generate sitemap' when pasting a custom XML sitemap into the project settings.
Webflow's auto-generator includes ALL static pages by default, including Thank You pages or hidden landing pages, unless you explicitly exclude them in page settings.
How to Use Your Generated Sitemap
If you prefer the custom XML generated by BuildSitemap over Webflow's native output:
- Download or copy the generated XML from our tool.
- Go to your Webflow Project Settings > SEO.
- Turn OFF the "Auto-generate sitemap" toggle.
- Paste the XML code into the "Custom sitemap.xml" text box.
- Save changes and publish your site.
