How PrestaShop Handles Sitemaps
PrestaShop handles sitemaps via the official "Google Sitemap" module (gsitemap). You must install, configure, and run this module to generate your sitemap, which is typically saved in your root directory.
Because it relies on the database, it can be configured to export products, categories, CMS pages, and manufacturers. You also need to configure a cron job to keep it updated automatically.
What BuildSitemap Checks
BuildSitemap performs an external HTTP crawl of your PrestaShop frontend, entirely bypassing the database and the gsitemap module.
This is crucial because it verifies what Googlebot actually sees. We automatically drop session IDs and faceted search parameters to ensure we only capture your canonical URLs.
URLs We Discover
- Canonical Product pages
- Category pages
- Manufacturer (Brand) pages
- CMS pages (About, Terms)
URLs to Exclude
- Faceted search URLs (e.g., ?q=Color-Red)
- Sorting parameters (e.g., ?order=product.price.asc)
- Customer Account, Cart, and Checkout pages
- Back-office URLs
PrestaShop Sitemap Structure
For large PrestaShop stores, it is highly recommended to segment your sitemap. Generating a Structured Sitemap with our tool allows you to bucket your URLs into distinct files for Products, Categories, and CMS Pages.
Submit these separately to Google Search Console to pinpoint exactly where indexing issues are occurring (e.g., if products are indexed but categories are not).
Common PrestaShop Problems
The native PrestaShop sitemap module often crashes or times out when generating sitemaps for catalogs exceeding 50,000 products.
Faceted search modules (like the native Faceted Search) often create infinite URL combinations that can accidentally end up in sitemaps if not configured properly.
Forgetting to set up a cron job means the native sitemap becomes severely outdated as inventory changes.
How to Use Your Generated Sitemap
If your PrestaShop gsitemap module is failing or producing bloated XML files, you can use our tool to generate a static replacement.
Download the generated `.xml` file, upload it to the root of your PrestaShop installation via FTP (you can name it `sitemap-custom.xml`), and submit that URL directly to Google Search Console.
