How Joomla Handles Sitemaps
Joomla Core does not come with a built-in XML sitemap generator. Site administrators must rely on third-party extensions (like OSMap, JSitemap, or Route 66) to generate XML sitemaps.
These extensions build sitemaps by querying the Joomla database and mapping the menu items and component configurations to URLs.
What BuildSitemap Checks
Because Joomla's routing can be very tricky—especially when an article is not linked to a specific menu item—database-driven extensions often output non-SEF URLs or miss content entirely.
BuildSitemap acts externally. We crawl the live HTML of your site, following the exact links rendered by your template. This ensures we only capture the final, resolved SEF URLs that you want Google to index.
URLs We Discover
- Joomla Articles
- Category Blog layouts
- Menu items (Single Article, Contact, Component links)
- SEF (Search Engine Friendly) URLs
URLs to Exclude
- Non-SEF URLs (e.g., index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1)
- Login and User registration pages
- Print, email, and PDF generation links (if not disabled)
- Component views that generate duplicate content
Joomla Sitemap Structure
A good Joomla sitemap should be flat and focused entirely on the canonical SEF URLs.
If you have a large site, generating a Structured Sitemap can help you separate different sections of your site, making it easier to track which categories are indexing well in Google Search Console.
Common Joomla Problems
Joomla's native routing often allows the same article to be accessed via multiple URLs depending on the active menu Itemid. This causes massive duplicate content if the sitemap extension isn't configured to enforce canonicals.
Failing to enable URL Rewriting in Joomla global configuration results in `index.php/` being included in all sitemap URLs.
Extensions attempting to index components (like forums or galleries) often generate thousands of junk parameter URLs.
How to Use Your Generated Sitemap
If your Joomla sitemap extension is causing issues or slowing down your site:
- Generate your sitemap using BuildSitemap.
- Download the `.xml` file.
- Upload it to the root of your Joomla installation via FTP (usually `public_html`).
- Submit the direct URL to Google Search Console.
