How It Works
A transparent look at the step-by-step technical process BuildSitemap uses to crawl and generate your XML sitemaps.
01URL Submission
You provide the root domain of the website. The system normalizes the URL to ensure the correct scheme (HTTP/HTTPS) and domain structure.
02Crawl Initiation
The system begins making HTTP requests to the target server, starting from the homepage and systematically traversing the site architecture.
03Discovery
HTML responses are parsed to extract internal links. Anchor tags are evaluated to discover new paths within the same domain boundary.
04Analysis
Each discovered URL is analyzed. The system records HTTP status codes, response times, and determines the content type of the page.
05Classification
URLs are categorized based on their path patterns (e.g., classifying /products/ as commerce pages, or /blog/ as articles) to structure the final map.
06Sitemap Generation
The gathered data is assembled into a strict XML structure according to the sitemaps.org protocol, prioritizing important pages.
07Validation
The generated XML undergoes validation to ensure it is well-formed, correctly escaped, and free of schema errors that search engines might reject.
08Download
The final, validated XML sitemap, along with optional robots.txt and llms.txt files, are prepared for you to download or copy directly.
Technical Limitations & Capabilities
BuildSitemap can analyze publicly accessible pages, but crawling can be affected by various technical restrictions. We do not claim universal crawling capability.
Factors that may prevent pages from appearing in your generated sitemap include restrictive robots.txt directives, authentication walls, heavy reliance on purely client-side JavaScript rendering without HTML fallbacks, server rate limits, and general server availability. If a page blocks bots or requires a login, our crawler cannot access it to map its structure.
